Label Text Long inspired by astronomical phenomena, Kiki Smith worked with professors at Columbia University and staff of the Rutherfurd Observatory to photograph the full moon using a special camera attached to the university’s telescope. Here, she includes thirteen iterations of this image to represent the thirteen full moons that occur over the course of the year. The format of the piece adopts the accordion-fold style of medieval manuscripts. On this undulating paper, the moons are printed above a panoramic photograph of the ocean that references the gravitational pull of the moon that causes the tides. Smith is interested in the interdependence of the human body and the natural world, and this imagery also alludes to the menstrual or moon cycle.
