Bad Blood

Label Text T.L. Solien's works combine lithography, woodcut and linocut. While Solien admires early Christian painting and folk painting for their non-calculating straight-forward presentation, he instills his works with an element of mystery akin to Surrealism. Solien was born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1948. He received a B.A. from Moorhead State University, Minnesota, in 1973, and and M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1977. After living in Minneapolis for five years, in 1983 Solien, spent six months in Paris. He returned to the United States for the 1983 Whitney Bienniel exhibition in New York, after which he moved to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Living and working in the isolated, rural setting of western Minnesota was very importat to Solien. It freed him from the external, art-scene pressures of New York or even Minneapolis, and the landscape provided tremendous inspiration. Source: News, September/October 1989.
