Schiele was born in the Austrian village of Tulln on the Danube in 1890. At an early age he showed a precocious talent for drawing and enrolled at the academy in Vienna. He and several of his fellow artists quit the academy in protest against its conservative methods and policies, and by 1910 he had developed his own distinctive style -- a strong linear emphasis which, from 1910 to about 1914, tends to be marked by an angularity and rawness. After 1914 and until his early death in 1918, the lines are usually softer and more curvilinear, and more emphasis is placed on modelling.

Schiele was unquestionably a powerful and versatile draughtsman.
