Label TextBorn in Augusta, Georgia in 1930, Jasper Johns attended the University of South Carolina in 1947-48. Following military service in 1949, he moved to New York and worked in book stores and as a display designer for several department stores. Along with Robert Rauschenberg, his close friend of those years, Johns began to introduce recognizable objects into his paintings while employing the painterly brushwork of the Abstract Expressionists. Johns' first prints were lithographs published by Tatyana Grosman at Universal Limited Art Editions in 1960. Johns rephrased subject matter he had emplyed previously in his paintings.
