Label TextQuick-to-See Smith’s work often explores the relationship between
contemporary American life and the complexities of history, particularly in
regards to the treatment of Native Americans. She often creates collage-like
pieces that compare and contrast words and images. This work shows a commercial
food label that uses a romanticized version of a Native American as
advertisement, as well as a boy carrying and wearing the American flag. These
colonial images are surrounded by renderings of plants, animals, and symbols
that hold value in Indigenous culture.
