Richard Long’s lithographs are based on a series of “mud drawings” the artist made by submerging pieces of paper in murky water sourced from the River Avon, near his hometown of Bristol, England. As the mud flowed down the page, it left traces behind, creating patterns composed by gravity and chance. The finished works are displayed inverted so that the mud appears to branch upward. River mud sourced near his home is a common material for the artist, whose practice explores his body’s interaction with materials found in nature.
