David Dunlap was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1940. He received a B.A. degree from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, in 1962, and B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Yale University, completing his study there in 1967. From 1966 to 1970 Dunlap taught at the Kansas City Art Institute, Missouri, and in 1986 became a faculty member at the School of Art and Architecture at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
At the center of Dunlaps's art are his notebooks.These small notebooks were daily records combining personal diaries aith planning books.
