Label Text Although he is better known for celebrity portraits and Campbell’s soup cans, flowers appear throughout Warhol’s career, from his time as an illustrator to the height of his celebrity. This is one of over 900 flower works created in the 1960s, all based on a nature photograph the artist saw in Modern Photography magazine. While the original photo portrayed hibiscus flowers, Warhol’s layered printing technique and use of only black and white transform the shapes into generic flowers, closer to decoration or pattern than any real plant.
