Alan Rath creates sometimes humorous, but always compelling sculptures that incorporate the latest in computer and light and sound technology. Using computer circuitry, digital imagery, and software programs, written by the artist (he has a degree in electrical engineering from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts), Rath's work investigates human behavior by alluding to the human form or to the functions of the human body. Thumper is an early, pivotal work comprising a machine that appears to simply, but miraculously, come to life.
