This painting depicts two men in Madison Square Park in New York reading the Daily Worker. This bequest was one of many made to a large number of museums throughout the country by the artist's second wife, Felicia Meyer Marsh.
Born in Paris of American parents, Marsh matriculated at Yale and during the 1920's he worked as an illustrator for various New York newspapers and magazines. A trip to Europe exposed him to the art of Titian and Rubens and the latter artist in particular comes to mind in Marsh's baroque compositions, moving forms, and full-bodied portrayals of vigorous young women. His free use of line seems to capture the rhythm of the city and its bustling activity and energy.
