Label TextThe paintings of British-born Phillip Martin are primarily the result of image making, almost in a magical sense. Like Paul Klee before him, Martin combines small symbolic elements-crosses, arrows, etc. -into flattened decorative patterns that suggest ancient and primitive ritual art. His large paintings often use fragments and words from the contemporary city world, reminiscent of old billboards, in a style that is related to surrealist collage. This smaller painting, however, is less strident and satiric than his large works, and has a more poetic quality. Source: Bulletin, January 1963.
