Label TextScholder’s work was strongly influenced by Pop art, and he often used
images of traditional Native Americans to comment on the ways in which
Indigenous people have been stereotyped by mass media culture. This work,
created for a portfolio marking the United States’ bicentennial, presents an
Indigenous man in full regalia holding the flag in a pose reminiscent of images
of Betsy Ross creating the first American flag. Scholder’s work reminds us that
Indigenous peoples have existed in the land that would become the Unites States
for much longer than the 200 years celebrated in 1976.
