Jawlensky was born in Russia in 1864 and prepared for a career in the Russian Imperial Army. However, by 1896 he had become so engrossed in painting that he resigned his commission as an officer and embarked on his new life in art. He moved to Munich and with the exception of a few years' stay in Switzerland, remained in Germany until his death in 1941.

His earlier paintings are characterized by a strong emotional, expressionistic quality but later a more meditative and contemplative quality pervades his canvases.
