The word "Zig" is Smith's abbreviation for Ziggurat, the pyramid-like temple of the ancient Assyrians, and is the name he gave to a series of sculptures completed in the early 1960's. The strong curved planes of steel and the "stance" of the sculpture imbue it with a bold solidity which contrasts with the restless, active brushstrokes of the painted surface. Smith's early training as a painter is reflected not only by the obvious fact of the painted steel, but also by the fact that the sculpture is meant to be seen from the "front", much as a painting is.

David Smith was born in Decatur, Indiana in 1906. He studied briefly at Ohio University, Notre Dame University and George Washington University. In 1972 he moved to New York where he became a full-time painting student at the Art Students League under John Sloan and Jan Matulka. In 1932 he made his first sculptures and his work of that decade reflects the impact of Picasso and Julio Gonzalez. During World War II he worked as a welder, a job he had held for a time in an automobile factory in the mid-1920's. After the war his works tended to become more monumental in scale and form, culminating in the Zig and Cubi series of the early 1960's.  Smith was killed in an automobile accident near Bennington, Vermont, in 1965.
