Sally Mann made her mark with the series of photographs entitled "Immediate Family," of which this image is the signature work. This series presents images of the artist's three children doing things that every parent has witnessed, including crying, pouting, or nursing a wound. But these things are not necessarily the things seen in family scrapbooks, and that is where, in part, their impact derives. There is brutal honesty and intimacy about Mann's vision that is unmatched.
